I go back a long way, I'm in the UK and I went to a grammar 
[academic] school - all seemingly supports for a lot more reading 
than the current stated average.   But I honestly don't remember 
many people in the class being avid readers, or even known for 
reading a bit!

So I am far less despondent at the figures.   And while we may 
think of reading being about books, it seems the at hte internet 
has almost everybody used to the idea of a lot of reading.   Far 
more than even used to regularly read newspapers, and I am sure 
from memory much more reading that was done with comics.
