I feel the reverse.  Great literature tends to endure.  Light fiction 
dates within a few decades.  Romance from the 70's, I think not.  If 
the misogyny didn't put me off the racism would.  Entertainment is 
embedded in the current modern culture and soon becomes laughably out 
of date or interesting only as a curiosity--unless it is literary to 
the extent of having timeless themes.  (older works by Ursula Le Guin 
still readable, robot/blaster sci fi of the same age, not so much)
