Because, Aaron, despite all the antipathy to print books voiced  
herein, people want to be able to treat an ebook reader the same way  
they would a mass market paperback. Drop it in the tub? No biggie.  
Leave it at the airport? Pick one up at Borders at the next stop.

The fact is most of the people who can't afford to pay $200 for an  
electronic device, whether single or multi-purpose, aren't going to be  
buying books, period. If they're avid readers, they'll do what I did  
when I didn't have any money--borrow them from the library. Which  
means that as long as an electronic device is inexpensive enough for  
libraries to afford a half-dozen or so, and insurable so they can be  
replaced if lost, damaged or stolen, the real market for ebooks and  
the devices on which to read them isn't readers but librarians.
