free reads as promo or no-pay venues

If you have short stories in the romance or erotic romance genres, and
your books are available on ARe, you can place the free short stories
on ARe...no cost to list them there, but make sure they are edited
well, or you do yourself a disservice. I've always found this a great
promo to engage in. In fact, ask Lori James or Barb Perfetti at ARe
what other author promos they have. They have two full printed pages
of them, and most of them are free to the authors...or not more than
$5 or $10 to engage in. WELL worth the money, IMO...especially with
their rising convention presence.

There is only one of their promos I keep turning down, and that's the
RT ads they run. Not that I don't run RT ads; I do, but I want to make
sure I get the review that goes with it, and with the number of books
they place in an ad at ARe, someone can't be getting a review, unless
they have some special deal with RT I don't know about...which I could
certainly check with Lori and Barb. They are straight-up types.

And, for other "no-pay" opportunities, look for charity anthologies
looking for donated works...or minimal-pay works (like 1 cent per word
pay). I'm already in one of these and am submitted to four more. Four
are romance/erotic romance and the last is straight genre horror. In
fact, a bunch of them are still open for submissions. Now, all but the
horror one is both e and print. The horror is print only, but don't
LIMIT yourself to e. Ideally, you want a crossover readership with
print. Even if only 1/1000 follows you home to e, they're readers you
didn't have before, and charity anthologies do sell well, on average
(depending on the charity they are for and how well they are handled).
