Sure it makes sense. Whether you're giving away a short story or an
excerpt, you're still giving a small taste and using it to fish in a
larger sale. In fact, all but one of my free reads (at the moment) are
short stories that sold as stand-alones two and three years back, so
they've already earned me money. Oh, and one of those shorts started
OUT life, before it was in e and earning me money, as a printed and
signed printout copy that I had a contest for 12 copies of. For
several months after those 12 copies went out, no one else got to read
it. It's amazing the number of uses you can put a single short story
to.

For the charity anthology shorts I mentioned, two have already earned
me their money. The other three are new work, but they're new work
that come in at 630 words, 10K and 8K. Keeping in mind that 630 words
was an hour of my time and the other two were no more than 10 days or
so, while I was working on other things, so it wasn't even 10 days
exclusively... Who doesn't invest a few days, once in a while, to
promo? If I'm not paying an arm and a leg but investing in promo, it's
worth my time to do this.

As far as books, the ONLY time I've given away free novel-length works
(short of paper copies handed out during a convention or something)
was during Fictionwise's free read promo...imagine Baen's Free
Library, giving away the first novel in a series, but it only lasts
for a couple of weeks. A lot of copies of my book went (3008, and the
average was 1577), but my sales of all books went through the
roof...plus site hits, as well. I still think it was a good promo to
engage in.
