Actually, that comment is kind of like saying "You know what? Burger King just made their Whopper $.99 for a limited time. If they were selling so strongly, there'd be no need to cut the price."

The economy sucks, gas prices are over $4 a gallon, and Amazon is working in a luxury market. Meaning, when people are having to decide where to spend money and where to cut money, they are going to first cut the stuff they don't need...like books they can check out from the library. By cutting the price a bit, people who weren't willing to spend the money previously may be willing to shell out the bucks now, especially if they had been on the fence about purchasing it before.

Apple cut the price of the iPhone a bit after it came out, and certainly demand hasn't waned for that.

So, let's not jump to conclusions, but enjoy the fact that more people may be able to purchase the Kindle now than before. I'm waiting for a bit more of a drop myself.

Jay

Subject: [ebook-community] Amazon Kindle now $359

Amazon just cut the price of the Kindle by $40. As an ebook publisher I personally find that
discouraging because if they were selling strongly there'd be no need to cut the price. On
the other hand, it's also encouraging in that it's the first concrete indication that Amazon is
willing to do whatever it takes to spur Kindle sales, which to me bodes well for its future. And
people who buy a Kindle now may feel that because they've saved money on the device, they
have more to spend on ebooks for it!
