I am only refering to the iPod hardware.
No one needs an iPod, they got one, especially when they first came out, because they like music. Any music lover could have kept listening to their cds or listening to the radio instead of getting an Mp3 player.
No one needs an e-book reading device, but those who love reading will get one. Any book lover can keep buying paper books or getting them from the library instead of getting an e-book reader.
But, as others contend, to say that e-books can't/won't take off until readers are extremely inexpensive or given away free ignores how a device brought MP3s to the attention of masses and continues to out sell all others.
