It might be just worth adding that I write from the UK, where we 
certainly offer a bit more to the arts, and it is the home to 
some of the bigger book prizes, but any hopes I might have of a 
grant or award [;-)] have been fully dashed by the need to raid 
the lottery good causes fund to try to make some sort of go of 
the Olympic Games money pit and nascent disaster.

So it is now seeming that Australia the US and here don't 
resemble Jon's remarks....

A vaguely interesting exercise in futility.
