Mark,

All that you say is absolutely correct, but I maintain that the 
majority of people who read ebooks are not really interested in 
that sort of flexibility.

The question of ability to vary the book - as through html or 
text or appropriate proprietaries - verges on the old copyright 
issue, and has ramifications that have taken up many virtual 
yards of ebook-community archives.   Most perople want to read 
without any distraction related to format or device.   Which 
probably why the designed paperback remains a major choice.

Those who want it [and I trust my earlier humour on .txt is 
understood] will indeed be looking for the advantages of various 
dedicated readers and formats.   But the question I addressed was 
whether pdf was the most used/popular/suited to demand.

And I am still certain the answer is yes.
