One of the first classic collections was the Harvard Classics, first 
published in 1909(?). Given its age, the Harvard Classics will, of 
course, not contain any contemporary writings, but it has the advantage 
of being totally in the public domain. The Harvard Classics are 
available on the web at http://www.bartleby.com/hc/. Unfortunately, the 
web developer used tables for all the presentation, which means that the 
works are not really usable except online; I'm in the process of 
converting them to XHTML/TEI for offline use.

Charles Van Doren (yes, the person involved in the great game show 
scandal of 1957-59) has recently revised and republished his book, 
_The_Joy_of_Reading:_A_Passionate_Guide_to_the_World's_Best_Books_ 
(http://www.amazon.com/Joy-Reading-Passionate-Worlds-Authors/dp/1402211600), 
which contains a list of 189 of the "the World's Best Books," along with 
essays by Dr. Van Doren as to why these works deserve to be categorized 
as among the best.
