Note that there are free e-book "lending libraries" out there.
Fictionwise has one, for its club members, and a lot of public
libraries offer them, too. The Mobipocket DRM enforces a time limit on
book checkouts, and you can only have so many books out at a time.

(Of course, the fundamental problem with this is that you can find
cracks for Mobipocket DRM in five minutes of googling, and once you
crack one of those books--as you have to do anyway if you want to read
it one of those platforms that aren't used by enough people for Mobi
to bother with coming up with a port (such as, say, your iPhone)--it
will never expire.)
