I read the post at boingboing and I don't really understand what 
happened. Even if Ian couldn't purchase more content, he should have 
been able to access and manage his kindle account. I guess I went 
away from the post thinking that we weren't told the whole story.

At Amazon purchasing content and managing your kindle are two 
completely separate functions. And yes you can download just about 
anything to your kindle FROM YOUR OWN PC. So let's say you buy an 
ebook at Fictionwise, then you download it to your PC, then you send 
it to your kindle.

Again, yes you can. I just go to Amazon, then "your account", then 
login, then "manage your kindle", where I can find a list of all the 
content purchased from Amazon that's on my kindle -- including 
current subscriptions. I can download all that content to my PC. 
Let's say I buy a kindle 2. (I currently have the old version). Once 
I register my kindle 2 it will show up on my kindle account and I 
will be able to send all my Amazon purchased content, including 
subscriptions, to my new kindle from the handy link on the website.

I would suggest that before "your relationship with Amazon breaks 
down" one should take the time to download everything purchased from 
Amazon to one's own PC.

As for stuff not purchased from Amazon, I can email as attachment 
from my PC any PDF, document, file, whatever to my kindle for 10 
cents. I can even scan a document into my PC and send it to my kindle.

The only "logical consequence" I've encountered in a year and half 
with my kindle is that I can't send content purchased at Amazon for 
my kindle to my husband's kindle. As a reader it's frustrating. As an 
author, not so much. What I probably should do is buy an ebook from 
somewhere else, not Amazon, download to my PC then send to both our kindles.

I've never used Mobipocket so I can't help you there.
