I'm not sure what you "want to read" that isn't available in it, save maybe
some non-fiction or e-books from the big NY conglomerates. As you said
earlier in your post, "a vast quantity" is available in PDF. I've found
precisely one book in the last six months I wanted to purchase in e-book
that wasn't available in PDF...unsecured PDF, to boot. ALL of my publishers
use PDF (almost all unsecured PDF, I'll note). They may additionally use any
number of other formats, but PDF is still the standard the indie/e pubs I
deal with use.

PDF is able to be converted for several of the "proprietary" readers. It can
be read on the computer and on many handhelds. As long as it's not secured,
for instance, I can read it on my Palm, after it goes through Palm's
conversion. To be honest, the ease of conversion, as well as the rabid
availability of it, is what I think lets it stay in the top 5. LIT never
followed through with their adaptation of the books to be read on the Palm I
own, so I stopped buying it.

To boot, Harlequin is using a lightly secured PDF that I read using Adobe
Digital Editions. It's no harder to read on the laptop or on the desk than
any other PDF is, and I can read it on both machines, though I can't convert
it for the Palm. Ah...one loss there.

But there's little chance that any single format is going to "dominate," if
that means all content will be available for it. As I said, all of my
publishers use PDF. Considering one of them ONLY uses PDF, there's not a
single other format I can name that comes close to that. Sony has precisely
two of my books, at the moment...out of 37 available in e-book from 6
companies...and they have one each from two separate companies, despite
other available books from one of those publishers. Kindle has a whopping
fifteen or so. Mobi has a few more than that. And it's not always that the
publishers aren't offering them for sale in the formats, either. But they
don't always make the filter-down onto the distributors in a timely manner,
especially new distributors picking up old books...or ones that don't
pick-up every genre I write.
