Which is why that argument is so dumb--a strawman. Most large ISPs use  
proxy servers. Proxy servers make persistent copies. In fact, a web  
page is copied in packets from your server to the next and the next  
and the next router every time someone accesses it. No copies, no  
transport. You can't read something without copying it. You can't  
evaluate something without copying it. You can't analyze something  
without copying it. The straw man argument of "well of course Google  
copies to compute ranks and show thumbnails" is IDIOTIC. That's how  
the web works. That's how electronic documents work. You can't play a  
piece of music without copying it into memory. You can't save a  
document without creating several copies (ever look at your temp  
files?). This is the way electronic documents work.

And if you don't WANT to be indexed, you can opt out. Google pays  
attention to your robots.txt. But the fact remains that it is of  
greater benefit to most web pages to be indexed than not to be  
indexed. Obscurity is the enemy.
