I agree with both of you.  The amount thought to be fair for books will
decline in many genres (though perhaps not all, as Jon Jermey pointed
out).  And people will be willing to pay what they believe fair.

The effect of competition is very interesting.  Sites like hulu and
youtube seem to me to be the first new TV competition for books in
decades, because of portability (watch youtube on the iphone).  Be
interesting to see what kind of effect that has.  In general, I think
the generation that grew up with gameboys (and now smart phones) will
have a really different relationship to books as leisure items, in their
adulthood.
