Thanks, Marion--this rationale makes sense. I do think that Amazon could give "accidental purchase" buyers a refund, remove the book from their online bookshelves, and just trust the readers to delete the downloaded copy. If the reader makes a habit of ordering the wrong book, Amazon could stop giving refunds to that person. No need to tamper with downloaded copies. But I can see why Amazon, and perhaps readers, would like this feature. Slate magazine has a very interesting article on this topic: http://www.slate.com/id/2223214/ The author points out that Amazon has recalled copies before, and that other content providers have tampered / are tampering with downloaded content. It's a very interesting article, if a little unsettling.
