In some senses this is the frightening part, with the implications of 'Big Brother'. The right would depend on the terms of the Kindle contract, and the dedicated software that supplies Kindle material. Perhaps someone familiar with it can give the detail.
In public relations terms the action was a disaster, as Bezos makes clear by his unreserved apology [still not worth much without a large donation to charity at least]. The irony of '1984' being involved was lost on no one, I think.
As Daniel makes clear in other parts of his post there is a frustration for customers in any form of restriction, and I have (I think always) been an opponent of DRM outside very valuable content. Understanding of copyright has become very weak, and I think it is that lack that needs addressing.
