Cushing Academy's library first in nation to abandon printed books

Cushing Academy is a boarding school in Massachusetts with about 450
students. According to the Boston Globe, Cushing Academy's library is
believed to be the first library in the United States to abandon the
use of printed books. All 20,000 volumes are to be discarded, and,
starting with the 2009 academic year, students are expected to do
their reading on their personal laptops or on 18 Amazon and Sony
eBook devices. The reference desk is to be replaced with a coffee
shop. The Globe says students are unconcerned, quoting one as saying
"When you hear the word ‘library,’ you think of books, but very few
students actually read them," while school officials note that only
48 books were checked out of the library last year.
