Briefly, as I'm a few thousand miles awy and it's past my bedtime...

Size can relate to all measures, or specifically to the page dimensions. I had in mind specially the length.

Adobe software is diamond deluxe. Most of what you need for your current ambitions is almost any software that converts to pdf. Don't rush the final, but start where you are and learn as you go with - is it Cutepdf.

Not familiar with Primo - but don't pay for anything till you know a little more. Copy that file  that you first made a pdf with. Now use that to experiment. So long as the original file is safe what happens to the copy doesn't matter. If you mess it up you can always make another copy to experiment with. Make use of the help file.

Er...  not really. If I come across something to show you.  Just to show you some examples of not very sophisticated go to Gutenberg Press - the people who digitalise public domain works and make them available. choosea few and download the pdf versions. Study them to see what you understand. Download one or two text versions to compare.

When you make your own you will make something much more sophisticated.  Give yourself a week or two to really start learning.

;-) You should always keep an original that is a master copy. And any work that needs to be done for turnign into a book should be a copy of that file. You can end up with many copies in the course of making the book. Any work you do - specially if it takes a deal of work and effort - should then be treated as a master for that stage of preparation.

You can call it backing up, or archiving, or just being very careful not to lose hard work.

It enables far more complex choices and is superior in many aspects of its offerings. But other programs can get very close, and that level of quality is not needed that much outside the high use situations. The price is well worth it to a constant user, but really is too complex for your current knowledge. Just think of it as the gold standard; your needs are only copper ;-).  If you go to PoD there is one issue that can concern you, but there are work-rounds for that too.

Just don't think of it as a need.

Sandi, I really think you should study a couple of starter  books and prime yourself on html [do a search for tutorials]. Even if you have someone to help you you need to have a basic understanding. 

I think you said you were writing the book still. I don't know what word processor you are wtriting it in, but most now have a pdf facility of their own. Check the help. If yours doesn't, get Open Office; this is free and a close copy of MS Word.

You may actually be using Word. In which case you might get great help from one of Aaron Shepard's books "Perfect Pages: Self Publishing with Microsoft Word"  http://www.newselfpublishing.com. Open Office can probably be used i nthe same way as Word.
