;-) Welcome to the world of ebooks! I understand the Gutenberg Bible is still readable in the original.

In all seriousness, the failures of device companies to ensure continued access is probably the biggest obstacle to ebook growth. I think those in to the market in past eighteen month have been addressing that. But they all require a propritary format to get th e best out of their precise device. I still think there is no real chalenge to pdf, which is now useable on the iPad I hear.

I am surprised if scripts to solve the problems of access to old formats have not been written. Most old WP formats can be untangled, though it can stil l be some hassle. Surely there are  software writers that have devised the answers - most likely open source and freeware.
