Now you're being ridiculous and just trying to offend people. Of course,
that's not stealing. It's one of the benefits of ebooks, and the US courts
support it. I wouldn't argue it. But ebooks are a special case, in many
ways, and making backups of things for your own use is not inherently
against the law. While taking that copy and spreading it around, with or
without people paying you for it, is against the law.

In the same way, I would argue that it's your right to create an ebook copy
of a paper book you own. I would be an idiot to try and stop it, and I view
that as a backup copy of what you already own.

Where you run afoul of the law is when you make an ebook copy of a book you
DON'T own. Copying an entire print book from the library is against
copyright...illegal copies if you're copying more than a small amount of it,
and some librarians or Kinkos workers will stop you from doing it. All the
more the problem if you decide to sell it or pass it around. Owning a copy
of the hard bound doesn't mean you can take someone else's mass market copy
of it. If that person wants to sell or give it to you used, that's fine.
First sale doctrine applies to legally produced paper books. Infringing
paper books are a different issue and a comparable one.
