Marion,
Is her speech online anywhere or is there a transcript of it for those
of us without the bandwidth (hard to believe but true out here in
rural areas, no video for me!)? I've never heard of her, have no idea
who she is, but if she has something to say, I'm sure we'd love to
hear it.

God no, it's not. To be fair, and with some small knowledge of the
subject, ebooks should not be a whole lot cheaper than pbooks. The
process is the same except for printing and shipping, which accounts
(by rule of thumb) for about 25% of the cost of the book--but that
does not include storage and bandwidth costs which have to be added on
and are not insignificant. So really, there ought to be made a case
for that, not in industry articles that regular people don't read, but
on every epublisher's web site and every bookstore's web site. There
is NO other way to educate people except to educate them.
EPIC could take this on, providing explanation, copy and a "seal" for
any publisher (not just EPIC members) who wants to explain the topic
to their customers--perhaps like a "Low Price Guarantee" seal, when
someone clicks on it, pops up EPIC's explanation of the true costs of
ebooks vs pbooks. EPIC could market this program to publishers and
retailers. It could be a decent source of income for them. Barring
that, some other industry group could take up the challenge of
educating consumers. But preaching to the choir isn't going to do it.
You have to reach the consumers where they are. That takes effort, PR
and articles somewhere beyond the industry rags and reviews sections
that few read.
