Not with you Jon; never heard of it.

Look, you can stick unedited and unformated text in a file and read it on almost anything. That really is just an electronic manuscript.

Now that may suit you. But it is not an ebook in any meaningful way. Most readers are looking for a product that does have a certain ease and quality in preparation, production and presentation. For that you do need a publishing industry.

So you may argue a corner, and then what you say fits into an appropriate context. But to slam 'publishers' because that way of doing things is not what you want, is odd. And it is more than possible - in fact likely - that your particular needs are not being met. 

The question is 'Why should they be met?' And if you are expecting people to spend their lives working for nothing to satisfy you; well, you shouldn't be surprised if there are few takers.
