As I understand it, yes you are a pirate. The person you gave the book
to is the owner.
Personally, I solve this problem (of books taking up too much space) by
stripping out and keeping the title and copyright pages, throwing the
rest away, keeping my copy the bill of sale to me, and using the ebook
copy (of scanned page images if nothing better is around).
