Let me make it clear this is not criticising you; if this could work it would be a good answer. My problem is that ther is no way any database will be complete - and I mean it will not be complete enough to protect a high enough percentaage *round the world*. Possibly not even in the US. It is a major argument that got beaten to death in discussions of a response to Googlesteal. That company's funding for a database was totally inadequate.

The second problem worries me more. Copyright is not just about published works. In all these discussions the right of any creator to withhold their work from circulation is never mentioned. The internet and the ebook make that a more serious problem in some ways. Recognition of this changes the nature of the discussion. Which I have been trying to do.

I am not aware I have been spouting anything about you; certainly not with any malice. As I have stated on occasion I have a high respect and regard for you.

But please don't turn my arguing a point, even if a bit finely, into a personal attack. It is not my style, and is not my intent. I tried to say in another post that we are not defining things well enough; there is a tremendous variation in 'ebooks'. And I think we need to be very careful in what is conceded in the clearly flimsy right to control copies of our works.
