I am just reading a 3000-word essay by Jonathan Fields

I bring it to your attention because it looks like more than just a good summary of many aspects of where we are. The depth of his awareness and ideas makes it a think piece that can only help with decision making for writers and publishers.

His underlying theme for his books and sites is 'tribal selling', something known by many terms and which is the unique depth of contact marketing possible on the net.

Although I have not yet finished it, I see the ideas, apart from the arguments he makes, as useful. He also offers examples; his awareness of the connections between digital and print impresses me.  He also considers there is space for the traditional (but not unchanged) publisher, as this quote shows: '...(more than 1 million books were published in 2009, about 275,000 of which were done traditionally), making the need for trusted curators, filters and gatekeepers WHO ADD SUBSTANTIAL VALUE to the process even more important...'

Most of all, perhaps, is his emphasis on co-operation as the way forward for all. If you have time to read it, I would be very interested in your views.

And no, I have absolutely no connection with him, except signing up for his newsletter just now.
