Having observed books without detectives or detection win awards which
are allegedly for 'Best Detective Fiction', I tend to agree. I think the
rationale behind most awards is
'try-and-pick-which-book-is-likely-to-sell-the-most-copies-so-we-can-attach-the-name-of-our-organization-to-it'.
Clearly any judge who gives an award to a book which turns out to be a
non-seller is not going to be invited back next year, no matter how
acute their discrimination is.
