Re: eBooks on Apple - Only From Apple?

My thoughts run like this...

The only reason people started selling and developing the apps to do it was
because Steve Jobs said no one read and refused to do it himself. Then Apple
was in a position of playing catch-up on their own equipment. They didn't
like that, so they tried to run everyone else out of the market that had
taken the initiative to give readers what they wanted. That makes Apple look
like a bunch of clowns, and I think their marketing department/PR department
need a smack in the head for allowing them to come out looking so poorly.

Beyond that, it has ALWAYS irked me that Apple felt they had the right to
take ANY money that should have been mine on a sale, unless I was selling
through them on purpose. While I fully appreciate the idea of "good for the
goose, good for the gander," and I understand that either all platforms
should be open to cross selling or not open to it (though it makes them
sound like whining babies to say it), it was Apple's own shortsightedness
that caused this problem for them, and they should have taken their medicine
like a man and be done with it. If they took ANYTHING from these app
developers, it should have been a minimal amount, which would have made them
look much more professional, and it should never have affected author
royalties. But that wasn't good enough for them. They want to own it all,
and that just looks like what it is...greedy.

The only good thing is that I can offer ePub books elsewhere that people can
purchase and add to their units via iTunes, and Apple can't control that. If
they try, they will be dealing with their hardware users directly, and it
won't be pretty.
