Jon,

You must stop this quite incorrect history. Recognisable copyright did 
not start until the eighteenth century. The monks were part of the Roman 
Empire/Roman Catholic Church which did not permit citizens and 
worshippers to read the scriptures at all. Not copyright issues but 
control. No other religion had such a system, and the RC issue was 
chiefly in Europe. Outside those there was not a great deal of written 
material before the Renaissance anyway.

As to your analogy, apart from a connection of technological advance, 
there is no similarity between the red flag and any aspect of copyright. 
Your correct targets might be contracts and company laws. Apart from the 
worthy efforts of several organisations like Gutenberg Press, there is 
no advantage to the reader and consumer of the free for all you support.

Specifics like term are certainly arguable. My only problem over them is 
that there seems to be no principle on which to base the current, a 
shorter, or a longer period. What does irk me about the 'free copying' 
argument you support is the absolute contempt it carries towards the 
creator of new works.
