This is a bit of an exaggeration. Most electronic CJK content and much
in print as well uses left-to-right, top-to-bottom layout, just like
English and other European languages. Right-to-left is accommodated by
ePub 2, but support is not required by the spec (so a conforming
application might mangle the content). Multimedia is supported as well,
with HTML 4.0 constructs like <object>. It does not handle HTML5-style
multimedia, as HTML5 didn’t exist when ePub 2 came out.
The point of the cited article, anyway, is that ePub *2* doesn’t handle
these things in those particular ways, but that ePub 3 will.
