Typical publisher hyperbole.
The best way to describe ePub3 is as ePub2 with bells and whistles. If you
don't understand ePub2 you haven't a prayer of using ePub3; it's not
different, it's just more. Saying you can skip ePub2 and go right to ePub3 is
a lot like saying you can skip algebra and go right to calculus.
If you've been writing in Mandarin, or Arabic, and have been struggling with
writing direction, or if you want to produce "multi-media" books because
readers today don't want to read, they just want to watch, or if you want to
include an audio book with your text book, then you will be happy with the
additions to the ePub spec.
If you don't fall into one of these three categories (and I'm guessing 95% of
the members of this list don't) then ePub3 is simply irrelvant; ePub2 will
still be your bread and butter. And if you do fall into one of these
categories, you will still have to master the basics of ePub2 before you can
take advantage of the ePub3 media additions.
