I am sorry you lost so much due to a company collapse.

I think publishers do get it. But since when were Gemstar or Microsoft 
publishers?

If you blame publishers for things they have no control over that will 
colour your view of the industry; but not accurately.

I am guessing Gemstar files were not easy to convert, and so neither the 
original company, nor anyone else wrote an appropriate script. 2003 was 
early in ebook formats.  It may be, from your description, that the 
files were held and only accessible on the Gemstar server. If they went 
bust, that is a hazard of business, unfortunately.

You describe very well the downside of the digital - '...vaporise ... 
back into the bits from whence they came...'
