Call it "planned obsolescence". Or hark back to the early days of software when programmers planted "bombs" or created obscure logic to assure "job security".
Really, I think that any proprietary DRM scheme simply creates job opportunities for hackers. And especially for orphaned products. Who will try to enforce IP rights for an orphaned product? And if they did, can they argue for damages in a Federal court with a straight face?
At any rate, my comeback would be that my purchase of the ebook gave me perpetual rights to read it, regardless of the future support of the reading device.
