Re: Indexing

I agree with Daniel's points on this and found the original article very interesting, esp. the index 2.0 ideas.

That said, as a publisher who has (so far) included an index in every print and online book I've published, I'm interested in the best way to handle things right now, which basically boils down to "how to represent the link text in the index."

We have tried two methods:

1) Use the page number from the print book, but make it a hot link. Looks nice, but you might as well use random numbers or wingdings.

2) Use the title of the section that the target is in. Doesn't look as nice, and can be a bit confusing, especially in a book that doesn't have a lot of fine grained section titles.

Any thoughts on either of these methods or alternatives?
