Actually, this isn't new. Shortly after B&N purchased Fictionwise, they
stopped taking new publishers. They SAY they're working on a new contract
for us, but that line has been used for about two years now. It doesn't take
two years to make a new contract.

However, I don't think Fictionwise is going anywhere, since B&N is making
money there. They still take new books from publishers already established
with them.

I suspect the problem might be that they want to ditch the conversion
process FW used to have, but to be honest...how many of us want to use it?
I'd be happy to just load the titles in the formats I've already produced,
like I do for everyone else. And that means they can drop the (what is it?)
$15 per title they charge for loading new books. Or keep that as an option
for established publishers that want to use it but let all publishers choose
to drop it and just load what we've created.

What annoys me is the number of books of mine that can't get to Fictionwise.
I can guesstimate the number of sales on each of those titles I'm NOT
making. Considering Fictionwise's cut, they are missing out on about twice
as much on each book that can't make it there as I am, which SHOULD bother
them. Right now, I have upwards of 20 titles that aren't on FW but are
elsewhere.

I'd hazard that ARe/OmniLit is already poised to take their place, should
they default. Of all the sites that take multiple formats (I don't just mean
4 formats...I mean upwards of 10 formats), ARe/O already excels in sales
numbers, compared to the others. Only Fictionwise usually beats them out for
me...when my books can get to FW.

One of the down sides to having more than one publisher. I signed with many
of them believing that the new FW contract was coming soon, and I knew the
publishers in question had the numbers to get a contract there.

Neither FW nor B&N seems overly concerned about this problem. Nor do they
seem to know what's going on. I had one customer rep specifically tell me to
"fill out the application," and we'd be contacted when the contract was
ready (6 months ago). The application isn't even ON the FW site. The only
things there under publishers are the note about the contract coming soon
and the link for existing publishers to sign in. BTW, I check for the
contract information about twice a month. No love yet.

Beyond that, when FW customers complained that they couldn't purchase the
books they want, because new publishers can't sign on, FW refused to give an
adequate answer to the customers. One reported to me that they told her: "We
are not able to share the contract details of our publishers with readers."
She wasn't even asking for that. She was asking when new publishers would be
able to load content, so she could purchase.

Grumbling unkind things about B&N. The Pendergrasts never would have let
this happen, when they were at the helm.
