On 'immersive' I rather thought he was trying to make a division that was directed to his intended point (which may have got lost), rather than descriptive of reader experience. Immersive to me means - for reading - having one's imagination captured by content. If so the use of pictures is irrelevant. If, as you suggest (and I think you are right), he meant 'all text', then that seems much easier to use - and more related to his actual article. There seems to be no agreed or accepted meaning of 'ebook'. I see it used for Epub, for Amazon, for one or two others to the exclusion of the wide variety. I think it should apply to all books and book style presentations in digital format; that goes from the old faithful PDF, through all the device proprietary formats to the latest html5, taking in txt and others on the way. But when it comes to some new ideas - the inclusion of video and audio and search and interaction - I think a new name is needed. Film/movie has differences from video, and from much tv output, for example. And there are significant bandwidth and quality differences between various capture systems - from phone to studio camera. You Tube is becoming like 'Hoover', a brand that is used for raw or partly edited material. I am far from sure there is a real demand for some of the visions of multi content entertainment for small screen or computer; the cost of them seems high and potential sales will need to match that. The other two categories were adult books that would contain pictures/diagrams/graphs and children’s books, and he admits that’s not an adequate breakdown. I imagine he simply meant immersive in that you don’t have to switch gears to study the pictures, graphs, and other “non text sources.” > > Of course, he believes all-text books are the only ones that lend themselves to ebook presentation, and I have to say I completely disagree with that assessment. > > It does annoy me that he insinuates that only self-publishing authors price below the agency norms, though. Rolling eyes. Yet another shortsighted one. > > Brenna > -- > https://spsilverpublishing.com/ > Brenna Lyons, Administrator, Silver Publishing > [email protected] > 1-888-608-0471 > > From: joseph harris > Sent: Thursday, January 05, 2012 9:55 AM > To: ebook community > Subject: [ebook-community] The Digital Future Still Is A Mystery If You Don't Publish 'Immersive Reading' > > > [I am not quite sure what Mike Shatzkin means by 'immersive reading' as > > opposed to other reading, but his comments on the trends are very useful.] ------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------ Post a message: ebook-community [[at]] * Unsubscribe: ebook-community-unsubscribe [[at]] * Switch to digest: ebook-community-digest [[at]] * Switch to normal: ebook-community-normal [[at]] * Put mail on hold: ebook-community-nomail [[at]] * Administrator: ebook-community-owner [[at]] * (* == yahoogroups.com) -------------------------------------------------------Yahoo!
