International E-book Sales Restrictions Explained

[Sometimes I agree with Chris Meadows, but very often I disagree. This

is an instance of disagreement. Here he reports on criticism of
restrictions on where ebooks may be sold. It is one of the disguised
attacks on the copyright system. Copyright gives a right to the rights
owner - which that owner may licence to a publisher or other person or
business - which legally entitles the owner to determine all the rights
to make copies (fair use and fair dealing are limited conditions for
specific purposes reflecting community interests in those specifics).
Such a breach, as that proposed for this/these right/s, ends the whole
publishing business, for publishers big or small and for authors and
other professionals.

And there is a false analogy with brick and mortar bookshops. Bookshops
*store* print books, they do not copy them; it is the nature of the
digital file that ebookstores do make copies to meet a sale. There may
be a need to check and discuss, and then possibly introduce a different
copyright system; but these casual appeals to... well to I'm not sure
what, except maybe 'I want it, and I want it now'. And I would point
out to Chris and all those who think like him that, as any good
organiser knows, things work by having complex rules, not by simplicity.
And the 'mess' of international ebook publishing, like beauty, is in the
eye of the beholder.]
