Changes in Amazon KDP .epub to .mobi conversion

I wonder if anyone else has encountered this.

Today I was uploading our next release to Amazon's KDP.  After the
epub file was uploaded and converted I downloaded the file to check it
and found the file was 4.5M.  The original epub file is only 1M.

I'm used to Kindle .mobi files being larger than the .epub files I
upload.  Our last title was 996K in epub size and 1,809K in Kindle
.mobi format.  But this is a larger jump than I'm used to.

I tested the conversion process with our last title and Amazon turned
a 996K file into a 5,785K .mobi file.  I've e-mailed Amazon asking if
they changed their conversion process and how, but I'd ask here if
anyone else has had a similar experience recently.
