Thanks for your note. I would like both to have both .epub and .mobi versions of the book. The book was originally published as a a 6 x 9" paperback . I have plenty of extra ISBNs and I can reuse the original cover. 


Right now the manuscript is in a Word file, 8 1/2 x 11". Do you know what the margins should be to fit into Kindles and other devices?


It is important to me that the book look as professional as possible.

What kind of outputs do you need? EPub? EPub3? Amazon? Do you have a cover already? ISBN? 
Also very important: What is the format right now?

I have about 7 charts in my e-book, approximately 15 photographs, and need an index. Some of the charts and photos may need to be resized and that I have no experience with. I am also under a deadline and do not have the time or patience to learn new programs. Maybe for my next book . . .

E-boks have been produced in all sorts of packages, including Word, TeX, InDesign, iBooks Author, on-line suites and dozens of others packages. 
In fact, it is easily to believe that MOST ebooks in the world started their production in MS Word.
The most suitable workflow for you book depends on the peculiarities of the book itself -- figures, tables, dynamic content, automatic indexation... and a host of other features...as well as you requirements and output formats.

I am curious about the advisability of skipping over the conversion process and going straight to SmashWords or another company. I would suspect it would be cheaper, but would the final e-book look sufficiently professional?
