John Hinckley, Jr., described himself in his high school days as "a rebel
without a cause" and was shocked to hear that Lennon had been murdered. A
year later Hinckley himself tried to kill President Reagan. In Hinckley's
hotel room, police found, along with a 1981 John Lennon color calendar,
Salinger's novel among a half-dozen paperbacks.
