Re: NP: Catcher in the Rye

Tim and cj's comments started me skimming through an old copy lying around
here. Surpised how much was familiar. It's almost like reading Shakespeare,
something that's become part of collective memory.  Early on came that passage
about people he'd like to phone up and those he wouldn't care to. And the joke
about his old teacher who if he felt any better would have to lie down. I
tried to read with the old "magic eye." Skimmed through much  too fast to
catch much probably. But, near the end, one passage struck me as a
possibility.  Holden is recalling the dead brother. "Just because he's dead
you don't stop liking him, for God's sake--especially if they were about a
thousand time nicer than people you know that're alive and all." I couldn't
help coupling this with where he finds "Fuck You" written in a place old
Phoebe and other little kids might see it and wonder what it meant. Holden is
very angry at anyone who would do such a thing. Later the words are written on
the Egyptian Tomb at the MMA and he imagines that someone will even write it
on Holden's own tombstone. Of course at that time the phrase wasn't used quite
as much in public speech and writing as it was to be in the later days of
celebrity presidents,  fast living rock stars and assassins. Not  enough to
inspire a sane person to seek blood revenge but I thought I'd report it.
