Despite Tom's excellent thoughts on the subject, my observation is this: All the money spent renting is benefiting only the owner of the rental unit. That said, if one is a vagabond, then rent. Otherwise buy. Despite the banks disaster of 2007-8, property values have always gone up. Even as a vagabond, my daughter and son-in-law (he's career Army) bought. Their goal is to have a paid off house to live in when he retires from the Army. I also was a vagabond, having lived in more apartments and houses than I can remember (getting a Q clearance to work at LANL was a bitch 'cause I had to list every place I'd lived for the past 20 years). I bought and sold several houses in those days. Finally got enough equity that I bought and paid for (no mortgage) the house I'll die in. It's on a river, near enough to shopping, and places I enjoy.
