Re: Buying vs renting

After 35 years of raising children, I have an adult child who still needs saving.  Recently, I've come to realize that only daily 
interaction might possibly still solve what needs to be solved, a second childhood / coaching period basically.  But also an 
intensive try at amateur cognitive & behavioral therapy and aggressive psychiatrist oversight; the professionals have failed hard.  
Even finding a helper who can coax him in the right direction hasn't really caused enough progress.  Everyone else is handled, 
particularly my youngest who is off to one medical school or another shortly.

I want and need to stay in Silicon Valley for various reasons.  We have a nice place in a great spot.  But due to various 
complexities and restrictions, plus certain flexibilities (continuing to work at home for the foreseeable future), I'm going to have 
to move somewhere suitable to resolve this.  In the SF Bay Area, the only thing that fits is the Sacramento / Stockton area.

I was enjoying my freedom from owning a house after finally selling my Virginia house 2 years ago after too many terrible tennants.  
Because I need two separate dwellings in close proximity, currently I think I need to buy a house that can be turned into something 
duplex-like or can have an ADU.  Rent, and housing prices, are rising there too.  Currently, some nice houses with the right 
architecture look promising.  Maybe I'll find something to rent or get him into low-income housing in San Jose, but after some 
looking, I'm skeptical there is a more viable path than buying a relatively inexpensive house in Sacramento.
