I finally saw the Daniel Pearl video that's going around, and it's 
obvious that someone got a pirated copy of Adobe Premiere for Ramadan.  
Imagine the propaganda they can produce once they discover all the 
transitions and filters available to them.  We'll be goose-stepping to 
the sweet sounds of Amr Diab in no time.

Because of my article on the September 11 greedfest, I've received quite 
a few e-mails from foreigners thanking me for being one of the few 
"intelligent Americans."  By this, I assume, they mean I'm not a blindly 
patriotic ninny with a tattered, forgotten American flag attached to my 
car's antenna.  This part is true, but I've grown weary of the smug 
anti-Americanism.  I'm a 23-year-old American female who is an 
expendable cog in the wheel.  What would you like me to do?

If I have bills to pay, projects to complete and clothes to wash, how 
much time during the day should I, as a privileged American, be expected 
to spend on pondering the solutions to meaty international issues, such 
as global warming, that weigh heavily on the minds of even the most 
uneducated denizens of Pakistan?  

Because, surely, Muslim terrorists will attack only American infidels 
and no one else in the Western World, so what can I, as a culturally 
ignorant American, do to make the life of an overeducated, underemployed 
Saudi Arabian male who has long suckled oil from the teat of his 
homeland easier and more comfortable?  

I'd hate for, say, French engineers or German tourists to get caught in 
attacks strictly aimed at evil Americans, and I'd feel so guilty if, 
say, hundreds of Milanese were killed by nerve gas in their subway 
system because terrorists -- I mean, freedom fighters -- were trying to 
take out the American swine they followed from the airport.  So, if 
there's anything I can tell Condoleeza Rice or Donald Rumsfield to get 
them to stop all of the war, poverty, racism, tribalism, etc. that 
started only after the formation of the United States of America, let me 
know.  After I finish my 8-5 shift, cook dinner, eat, pay my bills, and 
wash the imperialistic filth from my body, I'll get right on it.

You know, it's a lot easier to be critical and angry when you've got 
time to sit around and stew, which is why you see riots and 
demonstrations in poor communities, on college campuses, and in 
segregated European neighborhoods where immigrants from North African 
and Middle Eastern countries grow fat and revolutionary on the dole, 
while in middle-class enclaves where the citizens work 50-hour weeks -- 
not so much. 

It's why those spewing outrageously anti-American vitriol don't see how 
bizarre it is to condemn the collateral damage inflicted on Afghans in 
response to the actions of their leaders but rejoice in the collateral 
damage inflicted on Americans in response to the actions of their 
leaders.  We get it: you don't like America.  I know, it sucks to live 
in a country where you can't get a Slurpee and a bag of Hot Fries at 2 
a.m., but don't take it out on us.  We're happy little proles, and so 
are you.  Citizens of every nation are uninformed about the inner 
machinations of their own governments.  Americans aren't special in that 
regard.  

We're not privy to the closed door sessions that lead to secret 
operations to topple foreign governments.  No one sticks leaflets under 
our windshield wipers announcing the Coup in Venezuela luau.  The 
president doesn't invite us over for sticky buns and strategic missile 
planning.  Colin Powell doesn't drop off surveys asking for every 
Americans' opinion on the government's Israeli policy.  I hear from the 
government only once a year, and that's to let me know that they need 
more money to fund programs with which I likely don't agree. 

It's common knowledge that the American government does a lot of shady 
shit -- in this kooky world of everyone looking out for their own, who 
doesn't? -- but good luck trying to uncover and stop it if you're a 
mid-level stockbrocker who has a mortgage to pay and three brats to 
support or a dishwasher at a touristy restaurant sending your paltry 
wages back to your family in the Dominican Republic.  

So, if you hate what the American government does, take it up with the 
American government.  I'm too busy polishing my gun, eating at buffets 
and watching "Friends" to solve your country's petty problems.

OHIO - What constitutes pornography on the magazine racks these days?

The issue is making its way to Amherst City Council.

NewsChannel5's Ted Hart reported that it started with one local woman's 
complaint that the sight of near-naked bodies on magazine covers has 
grown out of control.

"We're part of the problem if we don't fight it," Millie Bengele said.

Bengele decided to take up the fight against what she says are offensive 
magazines on display racks, like the picture on the cover of a 
bodybuilding magazine she saw recently.

"His body was turned, so you couldn't see his genitals, but he was stark 
naked," she said. "Now, why, as a woman out shopping, do I have to look 
at that stuff?"

Bengele took her complaints to Amherst City Hall and found others who 
feel the same way.

"Taking them out of view of minors, and that's a large part of our 
population, and I don't blame them," Mayor John Higgins said.

Some residents believe Bengele and the city are overreacting.

"I don't find it offensive," Kyle Kalister said. "Most of the bad stuff 
is covered up."

The Amherst City Council will vote on a resolution next Monday, 
reaffirming its support of Ohio's anti-pornography laws. The city will 
send letters to merchants asking them to evaluate the material on their 
shelves. 

"I want our community to be a wholesome community, that's why I moved 
here," Bengele said.

DUBAI - A popular Arab singer, against whom a Saudi cleric has called 
for the death penalty for comparing her sufferings to those of the 
Prophet Mohammad, has denied showing a lack of respect for the Muslims' 
revered prophet, a newspaper reported. 

"Am I crazy to say such a thing?" Tunisian singer Zikra asked in an 
interview with the pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat. 

"I am saddened by what happened, because it has put me in a position of 
having to defend my (loyalty to my) religion," she said, adding that a 
journalist had distorted her remarks. 

"May God forgive him for landing me in such a predicament," Zikra added. 


Al-Hayat quoted Sheikh Ibrahim al-Khudairi, a judge at Riyadh's Islamic 
High Court, as saying the singer's remarks were "an act of apostasy 
which deserves punishment by execution." 

She had "mocked the Prophet by comparing what she has endured to the 
suffering and hostility encountered by the Prophet Mohammad when he 
began to propagate the Islamic religion," the cleric said. 

"She must be duly judged and sentenced if found guilty." 

However he added that if the singer publicly retracted her statements 
and repented, then no action should be taken against her. 

Zikra was quoted as telling a press conference in Doha, Qatar, where she 
was taking part in an Arab music festival this week, that the hardships 
she faced in launching her career were comparable to those of the 
Prophet. 

Egypt's Mufti sprang to the singer's defense, telling Al-Hayat she had 
"merely compared her difficulties to those of the Prophet, without 
comparing herself to him or his mission." 

A person whose remarks have been misinterpreted must be questioned in 
order to find out what he or she really meant, said Sheikh Nasr Farid 
Wassel.

OHIO - A convicted rapist has sued the hospital where he raped a patient 
in her bed, saying the hospital failed to protect visitors and patients.

In the lawsuit, Edward Brewer said the former Providence Hospital’s 
"inadequate security in protecting visitors as well as their patients" 
caused him pain and suffering. Brewer, 47, was found guilty in October 
of rape and sexual battery for attacking a 44-year-old woman in June, 
1998.

The woman, who suffered from cerebral palsy, died of cancer four months 
later. Brewer was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Brewer claims negligence by the hospital hurt his criminal case and is 
asking for $2 million in damages. A Firelands spokeswoman said she was 
not aware of the suit and declined to discuss it.

TENNESSEE - In a federal lawsuit brimming with biblical references, a 
Tennessee administrative law judge charges that her supervisors have 
created a hostile work environment for women and that she has been the 
victim of discrimination because of her religious beliefs.

Blair Scoville Morgan, 45, serves in the Division of Administrative 
Procedures of the Tennessee Department of State, where as an 
administrative law judge she presides over a range of contested cases 
involving state agencies, including civil-service cases.

The lawsuit against the department and several of its officers details 
her stormy work history in the division. It also explicitly spells out 
her religious beliefs:

''The plaintiff is a Bible-believing Christian who holds to the orthodox 
belief that the Bible is absolutely true; the Bible contains no 
mistakes; and the Bible has no contradictions or inconsistencies,'' her 
suit states, before listing citations from Psalms, Proverbs, John and 
Revelations.

Biblical references aside, the suit is also filled with language often 
found in federal discrimination cases. Morgan charges that the men who 
supervised her fostered an atmosphere where sexually explicit jokes 
circulated by electronic mail.

Morgan charges that she carried an especially heavy workload, and that 
because she challenged her bosses about workplace issues, she would 
receive scores of 4 on her employee evaluations when she thought she 
deserved the highest possible, a 5.

She charges that her religious belief that homosexuality is a sin puts 
her at odds with someone in her office.

The lawsuit paints a picture of a difficult work environment in a 
government office for someone with strong religious beliefs.

For instance, when she posted notices on department bulletin boards 
about the National Day of Prayer last year, they were taken down without 
her permission, she said.

Once she told Secretary of State Riley Darnell that she had been 
selected to be a member of the 1997 class of Tennessee Leadership, a 
statewide organization of women from a variety of professions and 
political persuasions.

She said Darnell refused ''to even acknowledge said achievement by 
plaintiff'' and she was miffed.

''That constituted sexual discrimination and contributed to the hostile 
work environment,'' the suit says.

PAKISTAN - An alleged murderer of Daniel Pearl has told interrogators 
that he slit the US journalist's throat twice because on the first 
occasion the video camera had failed to catch the shot due to a 
technical glitch. 

"That's why in the video you didn't see the blood oozing out of his 
neck, I had to work hard to keep the neck together so that it doesn't 
become obvious in the film that I am slitting an already cut throat," he 
said. 

The revelations were reported in the media here as Pakistan police 
exhumed a highly disintegrated and disfigured body which they suspect to 
be that of Pearl. 

A month after Pearl disappeared, a graphic video showing his throat 
being cut was delivered to the American consulate in Karachi. 

Four men, including British born Islamic militant Sheikh Omar Saeed, are 
already facing trial for the kidnap and murder of Daniel Pearl. 

According to police officials, the three men who led them to dig up the 
body suspected to be of Pearl said during interrogation that The Wall 
Street Journal's Mumbai-based correspondent was driven to a house in 
Orangi town soon after his abductionon on January 23 and killed seven 
days later. 

The place where he was buried reportedly belonged to Al Rashid Trust, an 
outfit banned by the US for its links with Osama bin Laden.
