This patriotic litmus test is disturbing. That you have to compromise your principles so that Maurice DuBois doesn't question your loyalty. "You're here protesting the war. There are thousands of American troops in a dangerous situation who might die defending *US*. Now that they're there, don't you at least support them in the efforts you're here decrying?" Hey, Maurice, shut up and tell me if Jessica Lynch was raped. Better still, were any of the male POWs? I need to know. While you won't find me playing a weekend game of badminton with any of the war protesters, and I understand there's a PR battle going on, please grow a pair. One of the great things about our beautiful country that has been blessed on many occasions by God is that you're free to be an anarcho-dork who wishes for a million Mogadishus. Use that right. If you are against the war, why should you support the troops? Because they're following orders? Because they don't have a choice? There's a whole bunch of Taliban (and soon, Iraqis) sitting in Cuba who would tell you that excuse doesn't fly with the American government, and refusing to serve in the American military might get you a court martial but it'll probably get you killed in Iraq or Afghanistan. We're not keen on the excuse that foreign soldiers were just doing as told, and by detaining members of the Taliban (and a handful of Al Qaeda operatives) without the protection of prisoner of war status, we've set a precedent that other nations, particularly those wily rogue ones, would love to embrace. There was this guy once -- I think even Bush likes him -- who allegedly brought forth the message that we should do unto others as we'd have them do unto us. You detain a few thousand Muslims -- perhaps the touchiest, most victim-minded, grudge-holding, crybaby group in history -- for over a year without trial or representation, don't be shocked when Al-Jazeera broadcasts images of Stuart from Kansas with a bullet between the eyes. War is hell, more so when you've already stated that you don't play by the rules. And has no one in the military watched a Warner Brothers cartoon? Waving a white flag and then opening fire? How many times did Elmer Fudd get shot with that ruse? It's Iraqi season. No, it's Yankee season. Iraqi season. Yankee season. Wabbit season. It's reassuring to know we've spent billions of dollars on high-tech gadgets, only to have our soldiers taken out by Iraqis whose only training is a bootleg copy of "The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show." Several of my co-workers (all former military) participated in Millennium Challenge 2002 as contractors, and they told everyone that the mock war was a farce. The guy playing the Middle Eastern dictator employed successful guerilla tactics against American toys and instead of soldiers being trained to recognize and fight against these tactics, the game was restarted, with sunken ships being refloated. Technology can get you only so far. A high school drop-out working at McDonald's can make change as long as the computers function, but what happens when the terminals go down? You've got an 18-year-old who can't break a twenty. I'm against this particular version of the war -- the one with poor planning, misguided ideals, and the inability to grasp that it's not just Americans who can operate under the jingoism of "my country, right or wrong" -- not the idea of an Iraqi war itself. But not actively so. You won't see me marching down Broadway. I'm not even going to write my Congressmen, for all the good it would do. I'm still waiting to hear back about why companies are allowed to use Social Security numbers as member IDs. Yes, I'm also waiting to hear how aliens managed to put cancer in my brain. I've got 23 -- scratch that, 24 now -- years of cynicism behind me, and it's hard to work up a frothy batch of idealism at this point. Where are my Carolina Iced Tea and the remote? It certainly would be noble and righteous and all that other heart-warming stuff if we took on a global Mighty Mouse role, crusading against evil regimes wherever we found them and returning control of the countries to the people (even if those people refuse to embrace Western democracy), but how many times would you have to have been dropped on your head as an infant to believe that's the crux of why we're in Iraq? We're in a no-win situation here. If we continue to press on under the guise that we're liberating the Iraqi people and giving them a chance to choose their own government, don't we owe it to everyone else living under oppressive conditions to free them? Would you want to live under India's caste system if you were an Untouchable? If we continue to battle against the nefarious threat of terrorism, don't we owe it to our citizens to attack Pakistan and Saudi Arabia? How many Afghan terrorists have killed on American soil? If we do continue, we'll be fighting forever, draining resources from our country and starting a new round of imperialism based on the theory that everyone can and wants to fit American-style democracy into their cultures. If we don't, we open ourselves up to very valid criticism of where our true interests lie. But what else is there to say? Screw the New American Century. Screw Operation Take Your Mind Off All the Stuff We're Doing Behind the Scenes to Limit Your Civil Liberties. Screw the faux gung-ho attitude about saving Iraq from a dictator who has been torturing and killing his people undeterred for as long as I've been alive. Let's talk about me. Lighten things up. I like my neighborhood. Sort of. The hardcore ghetto is slowly encroaching, but thus far, we've maintained a fairly close-knit community, where we pick up each other's FedEx packages when we're away (and don't even pawn them). The neighborhood is predominately black, but almost all of the trouble stems from one direction: the deaf, neo-Nazi white trash family (http://www.misanthropic-bitch.com/deaf_as_i_wanna_be.html) on the corner. There's been a rash of racist graffiti and vandalism in the past few weeks. Until now, it was directed solely at black families, but I guess my roommates and I showed too much love to the darker persuasion because someone tried to kick in our door on Monday night. While we were home. I was brushing my teeth, and my roommate was watching TV, when we heard a loud sound at the front door. The dog started barking, which probably frightened away the bastard. My roommate ran outside as quickly as he could and saw nothing, except a shoe imprint on the door. There was a group of kids hanging out down the street, but they were too far away for any of them to have done it. This is the M.O. of the deaf, neo-Nazi white trash family. They've broken windows. They've tried to kick in doors. They've put 2x4s with embedded nails under tires. They're hearing-challenged fucktards, and I'm so glad I have guns. I can only hope they try to break into the house of the Section 8 Vietnam vet who sits in his car for hours at a time. His car is under a tarp in the driveway. It hasn't been driven for years. His parents, who visit him regularly, don't allow it. The entire house must be booby-trapped by now. We have no trap doors, unfortunately. We have an alarm system and three deadbolts. What else can we do? Can Bush send troops in to liberate us? What kind of PAC do deaf people have? Must be a good one. The deaf people embody all that is wrong with those who have received a free ride by the government: unable to view themselves as part of a larger society and unable to appreciate what it means to earn one's possessions. They have no incentive to better themselves, and no reason to respect anyone. My neighbors and I have been talking about what our course of action should be, and we've decided there isn't enough mob justice in this country. No one would miss them, and they'd never hear us coming. ====================================================================== If my parents taught me nothing else, it's that money comes and goes, I don't need most of the crap I covet, and if I don't watch my pennies, I'll end up like the rest of my family: in serious debt and preparing for the birth of my no-brained, one-eyed creature that's got about two hours of life in it. (What the hell IS wrong with my family's genes? They don't live that close to industrial waste.) Because I'm not financially or emotionally indebted to anyone, I could quit a job I absolutely loathed, I can take time off and catch up on all of the daytime TV I've missed since college graduation, and I can finally pursue my lifelong dream of moving to Brazil and becoming a samba dancer. Batacuda, here I come. Immature? Definitely. I don't have to be stuck in a boring job, surrounded by miserable Bible-banging co-workers who go on for hours about the wonderfulness of Wal-Mart and "Veggie Tales," because I don't want to disrupt the kids' schooling or pay a capital gains tax for selling the house too soon. So, I've got three more weeks at this soul-sucking position until I'm happily unemployed. Maybe I'll pretend that I'm a spoiled rich kid and backpack around the world. In fact, I will be spending three weeks in Europe this summer, and I've got a place to stay except for one city. Any suggestions for (cheap) accommodations in Amsterdam? Your flat doesn't count. I don't care how big it is. I'm sure you do know how to use it. I bet the ladies do love it. But I'm afraid not. (I hope this gets me through the trip: "Forgive me for being American. I hate President Bush and the war, too. Please don't spit in my food. Perdoe-me por ser Americana. Eu odeio também o presidente Bush e a guerra. Por favor não cuspa no meu alimento." Feel free to tell me how to say that in your native language, so that I can expand my intinerary. And yes, my Portuguese sucks, even after all these years.) Maybe I'll take a French immersion class to boost my points in hopes of emigrating to Canada and taking advantage of their health care system. It can't be any worse than having Cigna HMO. Two weeks to get blood test results. Good thing I started taking Flintstone vitamins in the meantime. Maybe I'll go back to school and become a doctor, and then I'll move to Africa and treat poor people and discover a cure for HIV, cancer and the common cold, and HGTV will do a profile on my house. Maybe I'll actually get back into journalism. Nah, journalism in the United States is dead. I promise you, though, that I won't update my site. But if you like my site, tell other people about it. Don't write to me. I know I'm great. Convince someone else. I'm going to need the Amazon gift certificates. Can you pay off your car with gift certificates? (And a new logo. I'd like one of those, too.) ====================================================================== NEW JERSEY - The funeral for Amir Beeks, the 3-year-old Woodbridge boy who was sexually assaulted and beaten to death last week, was marred by a scuffle between mourners yesterday at the First Presbyterian Church in Avenel. The altercation was sparked by an unidentified mourner who blamed Amir's 17-year-old adoptive sister, Krystal Singleton, for the child's death. Singleton was with the boy at Henry Inman Library in Colonia when he disappeared last Wednesday afternoon. Police have charged a 10-year-old boy from the neighborhood with taking Amir from the library to his back yard, where he allegedly beat the younger boy with a baseball bat and assaulted him. While attendants tried to close Amir's casket after a viewing at the First Presbyterian Church of Avenel, Singleton refused to let go, sobbing and screaming, "I'm not going anywhere. You're not going to take him away from me." As family and friends tried to persuade Singleton to take her seat, someone called out, "It was your fault." The comment sparked outrage. As Singleton was pried away from the casket and carried out of the church, about 30 people rushed to the front of the church, shoving and arguing in front of a floral display of "SpongeBob SquarePants," Amir's favorite cartoon show. Clergy and police used the microphone to plead for order and respect for the dead. About 100 people left the church, but most returned after a few minutes. Krystal eventually was helped back to her pew, the ceremony started and ministers reminded audience members why they were there. "We're not here to assign blame, we're here to express love," the Rev. William Ingram of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Elizabeth, who officiated, told about 250 mourners, some of whom were wearing T-shirts that had a picture of the boy. (Note: It never ceases to amaze me how quickly black people can make t-shirts with their deceased loved one's photo emblazoned on them. Within hours of the reported death, it's not unusual to see family members wearing them. Is there a secret store that only they know about it? Is it located near the candle and stuffed animal shop that white people go to after one of their kids is killed?) "This is about love, it is not about fighting or any of the other things we get caught up in," said the Rev. Bill Johnson of St. Paul's Missionary Baptist Church in Elizabeth. In a careful balance, the clergy and other participants in the service represented the families of Amir's adoptive parents, Rosalyn Singleton and Jeffrey Hanckerson, and his birth parents, Towanda Faulk and Shawn Beeks. Johnson, who was asked to deliver the eulogy by Amir's great-grandmother, Vera Tuddles, said it was particularly difficult because he and his wife "have seven boys of our own, plus two we are raising," his late sister's children. Amir "was in a safe place" at the library, "but evil was lurking," Johnson said. "It could happen anywhere," said neighbor Frank Jazikoff. But he also expressed sorrow for the family of the 10-year-old, and praised Amir's relatives for saying that they didn't "want any animosity." During an emotional community vigil at the Henry Inman Library that drew 170 people Sunday night, Darlene Young remembered the bright-eyed boy she read a storybook to, just moments before he disappeared Wednesday. "He chose Clifford's First Christmas, so that's what we read," said Young, a library patron. "He asked me if he could turn the pages. He just glowed." After the story was finished, Young said Amir toddled across the library to select another book, but never returned to her table. "In my short encounter with that little boy, I am changed forever," Young said. "This library has always been a safe haven for children," Young said. "The enemy does not always come in the form of a large man or with tanks and guns." She urged all the parents in the room to express love for their children every day. "It only takes one moment to tell someone you love them," said Young, as mourners clustered in the reading room wiped away tears. (And apparently one moment to snatch them.) Source: Star Ledger ====================================================================== WASHINGTON -- The House passed a resolution Thursday calling for a national day of humility, prayer and fasting in a time of war and terrorism. The resolution, passed 346-49, says Americans should use the day of prayer "to seek guidance from God to achieve a greater understanding of our own failings and to learn how we can do better in our everyday activities, and to gain resolve in meeting the challenges that confront our nation." Under the resolution, President Bush would issue a proclamation designating a specific day as a day of "humility, prayer and fasting." (Now isn't that a sneaky way to fight obesity in the United States.) White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan said officials there had not looked at the resolution but "the president believes that faith and prayer are important and frequently references the importance of praying for American troops and for freedom around the world." (Which is why we're the funny uncle that the rest of the world would like to keep locked in the attic.) A similar resolution approved on March 17 said it was the sense of the Senate that that day should be a national day of prayer and fasting. During Wednesday's House debate, some lawmakers expressed concern about the measure. Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, a presidential hopeful and an opponent of the war in Iraq, said the resolution "may be seen by some as an attempt to inject religion into this war at a time when some of America's enemies abroad are asserting that this indeed is a war about religion." (A presidential hopeful not pandering to the small but vocal segment of American society that gives a hoot about religion? Does he have a shot?) Darrin Stafford, 31, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, WLWT Eyewitness News 5's Monica Abler reported. Stafford was behind the wheel of an SUV that crashed into a crowd outside Paul Brown Stadium in November 2001. The accident killed 15-year-old Scott Asbrock of Mason, Ohio, and injured three other people. The owner of the SUV, Frederick Shipman, 44, was sentenced also to two years in prison. Police said Stafford was driving Shipman's SUV because Shipman was too drunk to drive. The SUV was not equipped with controls for a paraplegic driver. Relatives of the victims, including Scott Asbrock's father, Mike Asbrock, said they are satisfied with the punishment. Mike Asbrock said the sentencing hearing was difficult. "I was OK until I got down here, and then the memories come back again, and it makes it very tough," he said. "It makes it very tough, but we'll be able to put this to a close and like I said, take one breath at a time and get on with our lives again and rebuild what we've lost." Stafford plans to appeal his sentence, Abler reported. Once there, they were told they needed to speak to a case worker and were ushered into a back room where they were arrested. That's how the Hudson County Sheriff's Office arrested 80 wanted fugitives who had various outstanding criminal warrants ranging from failure to appear in court to drug charges to burglary. As part of the Welfare Reform bill signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996, fugitives from the law are unable to collect food stamps. This measure allowed state social service agencies to provide client information to local law enforcement officers searching for fugitives. Sheriff Joseph Cassidy said the county began working with the local welfare division in 1998, conducting what the government calls "Operation Talon." Last Monday, Cassidy stationed eight to 10 Sheriff's officers at the welfare office on Newkirk Street. A few days prior, the fugitives either received a letter saying their benefits had been canceled and that they needed to speak to a case worker, or their EBT card had stopped working and they had to report to the office. Once there, they were taken into a private room and arrested. Cassidy said most of those arrested appeared shocked and surprised. One fugitive, who was wanted for failure to appear in court on a drug charge, had 70 vials of crack cocaine on him when he came in to find out why his food stamps had been invalidated, Cassidy said. "Others just laugh and realize they've been caught," he said. The sheriff said the operation not only saves money for taxpayers, but also saves a lot of time for the officers who would otherwise have to go door-to-door to hunt the fugitives. In addition to the 80 arrests, Cassidy said food stamps for another 100 fugitives were canceled. This is a savings for the state and the county," he said. "It's tremendously successful." But as the years have gone by, people have noted the slow demise of rock. While bhangra and pop has raged among the young and old to try their luck, the road to rock, especially metal rock, remained barren. But now, the industry is moving through a transitional phase with new groups popping out of their underground hatches; lo-behold rock rage is back. With a long savage ponytail, chains around his neck and wrists, meet Baber Sheikh, lead vocalist and front man of Northern Alliance a heavy metal group working its way to unprecedented heights. The band is a group of professional entrepreneurs who have respected jobs during the day and by night represent the devil incarnate. But thats a completely personal view coming from a critic. Baber himself has a degree in advertising and communication design from the Indus School of Arts and Architecture. He is also an educationalist who has given lectures at various universities and colleges across the country. And while the groups music has been outstanding, it has been their performance on stage, which has caught the eyes of all if not many. Northern Alliance can best be described as a death core insanity on stage. Meaning its total insanity on your face. Baber says that creativity has always been the name of the game for him and his band. Had we not been musicians, we would have been working in banks. Id rather have a dog collar around my neck than a necktie. And their performance on the stage has been something of a classic. Northern Alliances concerts are truly entertaining, something which makes the metal band absolutely sensational. Their onstage acts have included displaying savageness, which is the cornerstone of dark musicians and playing with (fake) blood besides walking on the stage dressed as zombies. Our stage names indicate our true message to others. I am known as the goat, as in ancient methodology the goat signified the devil. On bass we have reptile child. Chaos law is our drummers nick while aag is what our guitar players goes by. Baber however pointed out that all individuals were normal human beings who have normal jobs during the day. Our bass player is a computer engineer, Mr chaos law is a sound engineer while aag is an online editor for films and television commercials. We know what Baber is! While describing the band, Baber says, We promote misanthropic old school black trash metal, which for me is something out of form in a certain way. Asked what other acts he would like to turn on the crowd, Baber says jokingly, How about eating a raw buffalos heart right in the middle of a song in front of a live audience. You see what we do is alternative reality as we want to make a statement on the ground realities of life and shock a lot of people. Whether he or his band members will eat the heart or not, one thing is for sure that Northern Alliance and EP (Entity Paradigm) for that matter, are the best things to happen to Pakistans dying music scene. Babers other businesses also include making films and documentaries. He says, In a country like Pakistan, you cannot make a living just by performing but by following your heart. I am an artist who does his work from his heart. And I will die the death of an artist. And Northern Alliance has made it big in the live circuit. We were asked to perform at the National Lahore Rock Festival last year where we achieved second position as the best live act only after EP, he concludes. For anybody wanting to see this bizarre yet entertaining group of individuals they can, if not at concerts, visit them at.
