WYOMING -- A new twist in the brutal murder of a man from Wyoming, as 
detectives investigate if popular videogame was a motive. 

18-year old Michael Emery, 24-year old Brian Davidson and 16-year old 
Natasha Toothman were arraigned on a charge of open murder. Police tell 
FOX 17 News at Ten they are looking at the video game, "Grand Theft 
Auto" as a possible motivating factor. Witnesses told police the 
suspects played the game both the day before the attack, and again the 
day after. 

Police won't say for sure that they got the idea from the game, but they 
are looking into it. "Our knowledge of Grand Theft Auto is that it's an 
extremely violent game where the perpetrator in that game can kill 
people at random, can kill law enforcement officers, can drive his car 
and run people over," Lt. Paul Robinson of the Wyoming Police told FOX 
17 News. 

In a statement to FOX 17 News at Ten, the company that makes the video 
games, Rockstar Games, says they extend their sympathies to the family 
of Jerry Steinberg, but that, "The Grand Theft Auto Series is a comic 
interpretation of gangster activity and the story, names and incidents 
portrayed are fictitious. Any resemblance to real world events or people 
is coincidental." 

(I've been playing GTA: Vice City quite a bit this past week, and I have 
to admit, it's hard to control the urge to run over prostitutes and 
Japanese tourists while I flip between Nena's "99 Luft Balloons" and 
Twisted Sister's "I Wanna Rock.")

ENGLAND - A primary school has banned parents from taking photos at its 
nativity play for fear the pictures will end up in the hands of 
paedophiles.

Parents, local councillors and child protection charities have deplored 
the decision, branding it "political correctness gone bonkers".

Head teacher Sue Stokes wrote to parents instructing them not to bring 
cameras or videos to the play after school governors said modern 
technology meant pictures could be flashed around the world in seconds 
to be used by anyone.

Parents are divided on the issue, with one mother saying she could 
understand the concerns but another disappointed she could not record 
the play for posterity.

"These are special moments in a child's life and it's lovely for 
families, parents and especially grandparents, to look at years later," 
she said.

Child protection charity Kidscape said the decision risked demeaning the 
issue of child sex abuse.

"It is as if there are paedophiles under every rock, and it's not true," 
Kidscape director Michele Elliott said.

"We're demeaning the issue of paedophilia. I have seen a lot of child 
pornography, unfortunately, and I have never seen any pictures of a 
nativity play."

CANADA - A man on trial for sexual assault once tried to use fast food 
as an invitation to sex, a jury was told yesterday. 

Renald Côté, 51, is charged with sexually assaulting three women 
including his daughter Isabelle, who died at the age of 22 in July. 

So far, Crown prosecutor Helene Fabi has focused mainly on charges about 
Côté's daughter. They allege he sexually abused her during her childhood 
and again last year when she was in a hospital being treated for ovarian 
cancer. 

Yesterday, another alleged victim testified. Côté is accused of sexually 
assaulting the 25-year-old woman twice in 1997. 

The woman said the first incident occurred after she and the accused 
went to a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant and picked up food for a 
gathering at the Côté house. 

When they returned, Côté suddenly put down the bags of chicken and 
stopped her in the stairway, she said. "He said, 'Kentucky, you have to 
deserve it.' " 

Côté then grabbed her hands and tried to French-kiss her. He slipped his 
hand under her shirt and touched one of her breasts, she said.

She said she interpreted his comment to mean he thought he could grope 
her because he had bought the food.

INDIA - Separatists in India's northeast have launched a war on drugs, 
meting out bizarre punishments to addicts and peddlers - piercing 
padlocks in ears, sprinkling itchy herbs or simply executing them.

At least half a dozen rebel groups in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Manipur 
states have vowed to root out the scourge of drugs from the region that 
is home to an estimated 200,000 addicts.

The penalty for traffickers and drug users are weird. At times they go 
to extreme lengths. It all depends on the militant group's punishment 
guidelines.

In Nagaland, the outlawed National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN), 
which runs a virtual parallel state, throws addicts and peddlers into 
cages while its members rub itchy herbs on the bodies of the victims.

"The cage is placed in the middle of the village or town," an NSCN 
spokesman told IANS.

If the person repeats the crime, a padlock is pierced through the 
earlobes and the key is handed over to a village elder, who cannot give 
away the key until the person promises never to touch drugs again.

In Meghalaya, the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) makes 
addicts and peddlers kneel in town squares from dawn till dusk.

The rebel groups apart, women vigilantes in Nagaland and Manipur have 
also come up with ingenious modes of punishing addicts and alcoholics.

In one such incident, a few alcoholics were paraded on the streets of 
Manipur's capital Imphal with empty liquor bottles slung around their 
neck. They also carried placards that said: "I am a drunkard".

The northeast, which borders the heroin producing "golden triangle" of 
Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, has a major drug problem. Intravenous drug 
use is widely blamed for the spread of AIDS in the region.

The infamous triangle, which produces the world's largest quantity of 
heroin, borders Manipur and Nagaland.

LOS ANGELES -- A man was sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping a 
former partner and holding him hostage for eight days, sometimes 
handcuffed and in a wooden box, as part of a scheme to recover a stolen 
rocket-powered flying device. 

Thomas Laurence "Larry" Stanley, 57, slumped over in his chair and put 
his head on the counsel table -- on the verge of tears -- as he was 
ordered to serve life plus 10 years in state prison. 

"Mr. (Brad) Barker was not harmed in any way," said Stanley, who fired 
his lawyer after the trial and was representing himself in the penalty 
phase. "I don't understand how this is a life sentence." 

He told the judge: "Your Honor, I never imagined that I ever did 
anything wrong. I was just trying to be persuasive." 

He nearly broke down crying as he told the court that his 10-year 
pursuit of the RocketBelt 2000 has cost him more than half a million 
dollars and left his family "destitute and on food stamps." 

Moments earlier, his co-defendant, 55-year-old Christopher James 
Wentzel, escaped a similar sentence when he entered into a plea 
agreement with prosecutors. He was sentenced to seven years in state 
prison. 

Stanley and Bradley Wayne Barker, along with a third partner, spent 
years developing the RocketBelt 2000, a Buck Rogers-like jet backpack 
that was designed to lift a person into the air for several seconds. 
After a few years, their relationship soured as the men fought over 
money and possession of the device. 

Stanley sued Barker and in 1999 won the rights to the belt, which he 
believed Barker was hiding. The RocketBelt was last seen publicly at the 
Houston Rockets' 1995 NBA championship celebration. 

According to prosecutors, Stanley and Wentzel lured Barker, 47, from 
Arkansas to Los Angeles in November 1999 with the promise of a job on a 
Hollywood movie set. 

When Barker arrived, they held him against his will in an attempt to 
learn where he had hidden the belt. Barker later escaped through a 
window.

Norfolk, Va. -- A year after promising to temper its often graphic 
messages in light of the Sept. 11 attacks, People for the Ethical 
Treatment of Animals, the nation's largest animal rights group, has 
prepared a "turkey terror" commercial that draws on Americans' fear of 
terrorism. 

The new television campaign, scheduled to run through the holiday 
season, depicts a terrorist takeover of a supermarket. The store manager 
is shown bound and gagged, with shoppers cowering, as an unseen hostage 
taker warns that "innocent creatures" will be beaten, scalded and 
dismembered if anyone resists. 

The commercial eventually reveals the "terrorist" to be a turkey puppet 
with a demand that people stop eating meat. 

"We feel that the public is ready for this type of message," said Lisa 
Lange, vice president of communications for PETA, which claims a 
membership of 750,000 and is based in Norfolk. 

"What happened to the kinder, gentler PETA?" said Sherrie Rosenblatt, 
director of public relations for the National Turkey Federation, an 
industry group. "I think it is always inappropriate to promote 
propaganda that puts fear in anyone's mind." 

The advertisement, which PETA calls the "turkey terror" campaign, is the 
sharpest departure yet from the group's year-old promise of less 
provocative messages. 

"In the past, we showed people the blood, the gore, the suffering of 
animals," the group's president, Ingrid Newkirk, said less than a month 
after the Sept. 11 attacks. "Those images are not what's right to show 
people. 

"Because society has changed, we're changing with it. If society goes 
back to being complacent, we'll go back to provoking it again."
