I'll be in Toronto next week.  First time.  Staying downtown (no idea 
where yet).  What does my Canadian contingent suggest I do?  Which bars 
and restaurants are good?  Should I fake a British accent and talk only 
about that cowboy Bush and how he's destroying the whole wide universe?  
Or can I get away with being a wimpy American who blames America for all 
of the world's ills?  I can do a mean Ted Rall impression.

Have you ever spent Christmas playing Pokeno and watching "Pollyanna" 
with two recovering heroin addicts, one of whom is a prison convert to 
Islam, two aging hippies whose love created two recovering heroin 
addicts, and a nouveau riche couple living in a McMansion that has a 
velvet Jesus painting hanging over the bed in the master bedroom?  No?  
Then, you haven't lived.

My 23-year-old cousin is a scumbag.  Assault and battery, theft, fraud, 
selling drugs in school zones -- school zones!  The guy's done most of 
it, and while the law works quickly to send gay ravers to prison for 
selling ecstasy, it doesn't work so quickly for those who commit real 
crimes.  So, Cat Stevens got out of jail last week, even though he's 
facing numerous felony charges stemming from several incidents across 
the state.

We weren't expecting that, so when we walked in and saw Yusef sitting 
there, it was a bit of surprise.  Because he's sporting both the de 
rigeur scraggly Muslim beard and the bling-bling diamond cross he bought 
before being touched by Allah and 15 members of the Five Percenters.

"Assalamu'alaikum, my brother," I greeted him.

He glared.  

For most of the evening, he talked to his parents, avoided alcohol and 
pork, and prayed over his meal.  It was enough piousness to make the 
members of the House of Saud cry.  He'd occasionally add to the 
conversation, but it took my attempt at bridging the cultural and 
religious gap to get him to open up.

After my aunt, his mom, gave me a scarf as a present, I wrapped it 
around my head and said, "Look, Kareem Said, now I can hang out with 
you."

I figured he'd either appreciate my desire to understand his new faith 
or mentally note that I should be the guinea pig for his sarin gas 
experiment.

Well, I'm not dead.  Yet.

And so, Yusef or Ignorant Pawn or Jockstrap Bomber or whatever name he 
took after casting off the shackles of Christian oppression lightened up 
long enough to forget that Islam prohibits gambling and played a 
spirited game of Pokeno with his imperialist family.

So, how was your Christmas?

Israeli police saved an Arab porn actor from being lynched shortly after 
his wife, and partner in the film, was badly beaten.

She saved herself by hiding under a truck.

The couple, whose names were not disclosed, starred in an Israeli-Arab 
pornographic film, Youssuf and Fatma. The cover of the videocassette 
shows the two in the middle of an act against the background of a 
mosque.

The man is a Palestinian from Gaza while his wife is from the 
Israeli-Arab village of Tira.

The couple arrived in Tira on Sunday and was spotted at a commercial 
center. 

"A crowd began to gather around them as soon as they were recognized," 
said an Israeli police officer. "The crowd started beating them with 
sticks and also threw stones at them."

The municipality's spokesman, Naseem Khait, said they believe the man 
was a collaborator, a term used to describe those Palestinians who 
cooperate with Israel.

Chief police inspector Shira Liberman confirmed the man was a former 
resident of Gaza who had settled in Israel.

Israeli police detectives rescued the man from the crowd and drove him 
away in a car. An ambulance evacuated the woman.

The couple was rushed to the nearby Meir hospital with multiple 
injuries.

Later, the woman told Israel's Channel 1 TV that she agreed to act in 
the film because her eight children were hungry and she needed money to 
feed them. She was paid $150.

NEW YORK -- For some people at Salomon Smith Barney, it seems that no 
nudes is good nudes.

Last year, an employee of the Citigroup unit was offended by a piece of 
artwork portraying images of female nudes that adorned an elevator 
vestibule in one of the firm's downtown Manhattan offices. So he asked 
that it be taken down.

The artwork, titled "Two Newds," was removed, but a few months later, it 
reappeared. This time, more workers asked that it be taken down again. 
It was -- then again put back up. And again it was taken down. 

The owners of the office building, a pair of septuagenarian brothers, 
strongly disagree that the artwork is offensive or that their tenants 
have a right to take it down. Melvyn and Robert Kaufman, who built the 
26-story office tower just off Wall Street more than 30 years ago, 
believe it's a matter of principle that the artwork stay. They vow to 
reinstall it.

"What is going to be left if we give in every time somebody makes one of 
these ridiculous complaints?" fumes Robert Kaufman, 75 years old. 

Melvyn Kaufman, 78, commissioned the black-and-white silhouettes when 
the building opened back in 1970.  Two semi-circular plexiglass panels, 
each about five feet tall, are attached to two exit doors at the back of 
a hall of elevators that serves as a building entrance.

To a casual observer, the two semicircles form what looks like a big 
round Rorschach inkblot whose inner edges are abstract swirls. But 
closer scrutiny reveals that each of the mirror images is really the 
shadowy figure of a nude female. Many viewers don't see the nude bodies, 
and the brothers say they've never received a complaint about it until 
now.

Today, the naked ladies are pitting an old-time family real-estate firm 
against a pair of Wall Street titans: Goldman Sachs Group, which leases 
the building, and Salomon Smith Barney, which sublets four floors from 
Goldman and has allied with its rival for this feud.

Of the "Two Newds" dispute, Susan Thomson, a Salomon Smith Barney 
spokeswoman, says it's not a judgment about art. "It's about our 
commitment to creating a respectful and comfortable work environment for 
all employees. We regret the building owner fails to understand and 
respect that right."

For its part, Goldman says it just wants to meet its tenant's request. 
"Art is very much a matter of taste and people clearly have strong 
opinions," says Lucas van Praag, a bank spokesman. "I think that 
whenever possible, we like to keep our tenants happy."

The latest ruckus started when a unit of Salomon moved to the building, 
which the Kaufmans now co-own, in October 2001. Before the staff 
arrived, Eugene Clark, an attorney at the firm, toured the building. 
When he saw "Two Newds," he thought it might offend women in the office 
and asked the building's management company, Jones Lang LaSalle, to 
remove it. By the time the employees moved in, the piece was gone.

This spring, a Kaufman engineer noticed the nudes were missing. When he 
reported it to the brothers, they ordered Jones Lang to put the piece 
back up, citing a clause in Goldman's lease that prevents the tenant 
from changing "the basic design of the ground floor of the building."

With the reappearance of the nudes, Mr. Clark started getting complaints 
from women workers. "It was the talk of the office," recalls Cindy 
Heller, a 51-year-old vice president of accounting in Salomon's legal 
department. "It was inappropriate for corporate America. It was 
embarrassing."

Mr. Clark complained to managers at Jones Lang, who removed the artwork 
five days later.

This time, the Kaufmans were steaming. Melvyn Kaufman called Goldman, 
demanding that the piece be reinstated. 

Goldman initially resisted, but a few days later, it ordered the 
building managers to put "Two Newds" back up. When Salomon's Mr. Clark 
complained again to Jones Lang, this time he was told the artwork 
couldn't come down because Goldman's lease prevented it.

At that point, Mr. Clark called an attorney at Goldman Sachs directly. 
Two days later, the piece came down again.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Denmark sued the European Union's executive 
Commission yesterday for giving Greece exclusive rights to produce feta 
cheese, calling the product a generic foodstuff, not a regional 
delicacy. 

Greece has tried since 1989 to have the EU ban other nations from using 
the label, saying the cheese has been made there since ancient times. 
       
In October, the EU's head office added feta to a list of hundreds of 
gourmet products given "designation of origin" protection. That means 
they can only be produced in a given area, using traditional methods. 

"The government doesn't believe that feta is a generic name of origin 
but a generic name of goods, which cannot be protected," Danish Food 
Minister Mariann Fischer Boel said. 

Denmark was victorious in a 1999 EU court hearing against Greece getting 
exclusive rights to the feta name. But by introducing new legislation 
this year, the EU Commission was able to sidestep the court decision. 

According to EU guidelines, feta cheese can be produced only in certain 
parts of Greece and with strict product specifications. 

Greece has claimed feta should be made only from sheep's milk, or a 
mixture of goat and sheep's milk, from livestock that eat grass and 
flowers in the rugged Greek countryside. 

Other EU countries often make it with cow's milk and then whiten it to 
avoid the yellow color that results from the aging of cow milk. 

Although German and French producers also make feta, the Danes have 
taken the lead in campaigns to have feta declared a generic product like 
cheddar or camembert, in recognition of the fact that production has 
spread well beyond the cheese's origin. 

The EU has nearly 150 cheeses on its list of protected regional 
products, including gorgonzola from Italy, French brie de Meaux and 
English Stilton, as well as 19 other Greek cheeses and Danish blue.

MALAWI - Rumours of people being attacked for their blood have swept 
southern areas of Malawi. 

Terrified villagers have left their fields untended, too scared of 
becoming the next victims of the mysterious blood-suckers. 

President Bakili Muluzi has joined other officials in trying to calm 
fears and has said the rumours are unfounded and a plot to undermine the 
government. 
  
But residents have been taking the law into their own hands, killing one 
man thought to be a human vampire and badly injuring three others. 

Some people - mainly women and children - have come forward to say they 
have been victims of the blood-thieves. 

One woman showed journalists a mark on her arm where she said a needle 
was inserted to draw her blood.

Strangers are becoming victims of vigilantes as villagers are wary of 
anyone who is not known in their area.

One man was stoned to death after being suspected of working with the 
vampires. 

In Thyolo, villagers attacked three Roman Catholic priests who were 
strangers to the area. 

They were beaten and detained overnight before a woman recognised one of 
them as a priest. 

Police and government officials have visited the areas hit by the 
stories to try to calm fears. 

Mr Muluzi, back from a private visit to Britain, has now joined that 
campaign. 

He said he had been told the rumours had been spread by "malicious and 
irresponsible" members of the opposition. 

He had learnt the stories included claims that his government was 
colluding with international aid agencies to supply them with human 
blood in exchange for food aid. 

"No government can go about sucking blood of its own people," said the 
president. "That's thuggery." 

He said there would be severe punishment for the unnamed opposition 
politicians once they were caught.

CALIFORNIA -- A man has been arrested on suspicion of performing female 
circumcisions and other illegal body alterations at his home without a 
license, officials said.

Todd Cameron Bertrang, 40, faces charges of performing dozens of illegal 
and disfiguring medical procedures since 1997, including 
clitoridectomies and penile piercings, Medical Board of California 
investigators said Monday. 

"Your typical piercing doesn't rise to the level of practicing medicine, 
which requires a license," said John Hirai, supervising investigator for 
the agency. "In this case, Bertrang did procedures on people that 
altered their body beyond a typical piercing."

The victims, who were mostly in their 20s, sought out Bertrang to 
perform a variety of "body modifications" that were detailed on his Web 
site (http://toddbertrang.com/indexms.html), Hirai said. 

Earlier this year, the site caught the attention of a doctor who 
reported to the medical board that Bertrang was performing 
clitoridectomies on women in Southern California, authorities said. The 
agency launched an investigation under a unit known as Operation Safe 
Medicine.

The FBI, which had also received a complaint about Bertrang, had opened 
its own probe about the same time.

"I've been with the medical board a long time, and I can't remember a 
case like this," agency spokesman David Thorton said.
