In metro areas and on routes where there are few competitive suppliers dark fiber is usually the better bet. In the more competitive corridors where there is an abundant supply of wavelengths it still remains an open question of which is the better value proposition. A lot depends on the expected number of wavelengths that will be required for the lifetime of the network. A consulting company Analsys has a done wonderful detailed analysis on the pros and cons of dark fiber versus wavelengths for Ukerna, the UK R&E network organization in their planning for their next generation network SuperJANET5. Although every country has its own unique requirements this document is well worth the reading to understand the many complex issues of fiber versus wavelength ownership. Their conclusion? Fiber ownership is a far better value proposition.
