The Department of Public Works of Canada has issued an RFI to procure a dark
fiber network to connect the various government departments in Ottawa with
dark fiber.

The government of Canada will take responsibility of lighting the fiber and
will provide dedicated fiber strands, lightpaths and/or VPNs to the various
government facilities in and around Ottawa.

The Government hopes to achieve significant savings in bandwidth costs and
other charges with their own fiber network as opposed to traditional managed
services.

The Canberra fiber network (ICON) in Australia is a good example of this
type of network model
