Creation of Intelligent Communities A Priority For Canada

Experts at prestigious Canadian Telecom Summit call for business-government
partnerships

Toronto, Ontario, June 16, 2005 -- An elite group of experts from Canada's
telecommunications community gave their advice on Canada's priorities in
competing in a global race to create Intelligent Communities, calling for
the creation of a number of world-leading Intelligent Communities in Canada.
In a real-time poll held at the 2005 Canadian Telecom Summit, 70 per cent of
the delegates said that the most important goal for Canada is to create in
Canada a number of the world's leading Intelligent Communities.

The audience, consisting of the leading opinion-makers on telecom policy,
gave decisive support (52 per cent) to the idea that the best way for
business to participate in the creation of these Intelligent Communities, is
through Public-Private partnerships similar to the CANARIE model. 

The experts were quick to quantify the amount of benefit that this would
bring to society. In terms of economic expansion, two-thirds said that it
would be very beneficial, and an additional one in four said that it would
be at least moderately beneficial. Creating an Intelligent Community, in
fact, would be critical to Canada's economic survival, according to 62 per
cent of the respondents. 

The residents living in these new intelligent communities will also benefit.
The experts pointed out (81 per cent) that establishing an Intelligent
Community would be essential to the creation of a vibrant community, and to
employment in knowledge-intensive jobs (88 percent).

The interactive real-time survey was carried out during a CATA-sponsored CEO
Panel session at the Summit, called Creating The Intelligent Community. The
CEO Panel was chaired by Bill Hutchison, President of Hutchison Management
International and Chair of CATA's TorTECH community and it featured John
Campbell, President and CEO of the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization
Corporation, Dave Nikolejsin, Assistant Deputy Minister, Ministry of
Management Services, British Columbia, and Louis Zacharilla, Director of the
New York-based Global Marketing, Intelligent Community Forum. The voting
equipment and software was provided by a Canadian leader in real-time
decision-making, Sharpe Decisions Inc.

The 2005 Canadian Telecom Summit, was held at the Toronto Congress Centre
May 30-June 1, 2005. The Summit brought together the leaders of the Canadian
telecommunications industry for three days of discussion of important issues
facing service providers, manufacturers, customers, regulators and policy
makers. The speakers in this year's conference included the Presidents and
CEOs of MCI, Vonage, Cisco, Telus, Microsoft, Ericsson, Sprint, Allstream,
Siemens, Rogers Wireless, palmOne, Avaya, Alcatel, BCE, and others in the
private sector. The conference attracted a sell-out audience of 550
opinion-leaders from the industry and government.
